The 2019 Gruen Prize is awarded to Evan Vance for his essay, “Epigraphic Evidence for Public and Sacred Finance in the Archaid Argolid.”  This paper weds close and detailed analysis of a set of difficult documentary texts to a broader analysis of economic activity in the archaic period.  His conclusions about the conceptual and practical overlap between cultic and state activity in the Argolid makes an important intervention in our understanding of the emergence of public property as an idea, shedding new light on the dynamics of pre-coinage economies in the Greek world.

Congratulations, Evan!
