Etruscan Exhibition at UC Berkeley

April 22, 2026

The Etruscans Uncovered: The Phoebe A. Hearst Collection at UC Berkeley opened in the Doe Library with a reception in the Morrison Library to a record-breaking crowd of over 130 attendees! Organized by Lisa Pieraccini’s spring 2025 seminar, Etruscan Pasts, Present & Futures and co-curated with Lynn Cunningham, Art History Librarian, this exhibition is a first of its kind — literally. The Etruscan collection at the Hearst has not been the focus of an exhibition since it arrived to campus in 1902 (Pieraccini also opened a small exhibit in December of 2025 in the Hearst Museum, open Fridays from noon to 4 pm).

The Brown Gallery in the Doe has only featured rare books, archival materials, and special subject collections. This is the first time that artifacts have been the focus of an exhibition. The collection history, Etruscan religion and ritual, as well as gender and personal adornment are all explored. The iconic Etruscan banquet is also featured with drinking cups and wine pitchers. Pieraccini included a case dedicated to how the Etruscans  continue to impact artists, writers, and even film directors! Stop by the Brown Gallery in the main lobby of the Doe — the exhibit is a “teaser” of what the Hearst collection holds in Etruscan material (some 4,000 pieces), but the exhibit will not disappoint — as can be seen by our Chancellor’s most recent visit!
