N.B.: These timelines are advisory (and admonitory) only.
MA/PhD students
YEAR 1 By the end of this year you should have:
1. Completed at least half the coursework required for Stage I;
2. Made significant progress toward fulfilling your ancient and modern language requirements;
3. Chosen the first member of your Advisory Committee (spring);
4. Taken your first modern language exam.
YEAR 2 By the end of this year you should have:
1. Chosen all members of your Advisory Committee and named its Chair (fall);
2. Completed your Third Semester Review (fall);
3. Completed all coursework required for Stage I;
4. Completed or made significant progress on your Qualifying Paper;
5. Taken or be about to take your Greek or Latin exam; or completed the first year of an ancient
Near Eastern language.
YEAR 3 By the end of this year you should have:
1. Completed your Qualifying Paper (fall);
2. Chosen your major and two minor fields (fall);
3. Petitioned to proceed to Stage II (fall);
4. Made significant progress toward fulfilling the coursework requirement for Stage II;
5. Taken or be about to take your Latin or Greek exam; or have completed the second year of your
first
ancient Near Eastern language;
6. Begun the first year of your second ancient language, if specializing in the Near East or Egypt;
7. Taken or be about to take the second
modern language exam.
YEAR 4 By the end of this year you should have:
1. Completed all coursework required for Stage II;
2. Taken your second ancient language exam or completed the first year of your second ancient
Near Eastern language;
3. Taken your second modern language exam;
4. Completed your Fieldwork Requirement.
YEAR 5 By the end of this year you should have:
1. Reconstituted your Advisory Committee as a Candidacy/QE Committee (fall);
2. Submitted your PhD prospectus to this Committee (fall);
3. Completed your PhD colloquium (fall);
4. Taken your PhD preliminary written exam and Qualifying Examination.
YEAR 6 By the end of this year you should have:
1. Made significant progress with your PhD dissertation research;
2. Started writing your dissertation.
YEARS 7-8 By the end of this period you should have:
1. Written your dissertation;
2. Submitted your dissertation to the Dissertation Committee for comments (at least 3 months
before the filing deadline);
3. Submitted your dissertation to the Dissertation Committee for signature
4. Landed a job.
Post-MA entrants
YEAR 1 By the end of this year you should have:
1. Begun the coursework required for Stage II;
2. Completed the ancient and modern language requirements required for Stage I;
3. Chosen all members of your Advisory Committee and named its Chair.
YEAR 2 By the end of this year you should have:
1. Completed your Third Semester Review (fall);
2. Petitioned to proceed to Stage II (by Nov. 1);
3. Made significant progress toward fulfilling the coursework requirement for Stage II;
4. Taken or be about to take your Latin or Greek exam; or completed the second year of an ancient
Near Eastern language;
5. Begun the first year of your second ancient language, if specializing in the Near East or Egypt;
6. Taken or be about to take your second modern language exam.
YEARS 3-7
