E. Additional Requirements for Those Wishing to Earn an MA Degree

If the student wishes to receive an MA degree, the Qualifying Paper may be submitted as an MA Thesis
after its approval by the student’s Advisory Committee and either before or after he or she petitions to
proceed to Stage II. For this purpose, Graduate Division requires its approval by a committee of three
readers; two will normally be Academic Senate members of the Advisory Committee. It is recommended
that the third member be an Academic Senate member from a UC Berkeley department outside AHMA,
but this is not required.

Students are responsible for meeting filing deadlines and for preparing the thesis in the proper form. The
Graduate Division publishes its requirements for preparing and filing the Thesis; this includes matters of
formatting, method of submission, deadlines, and payment of fees. Requirements must be carefully
followed.

All students must show proof of registration or Filing Fee status when they file the thesis at Graduate
Division. The filing deadline is usually the last business day of the semester; see the Graduate Division
website for annually updated deadlines.
